The Hindu English Vocabulary

1) Deportation (Noun) —

Meaning: the action of deporting a foreigner from a country.

Synonyms: expulsion, expelling, banishment, banishing, exile

Antonyms: admission

Usage: “asylum seekers facing deportation

2) Heft (Verb) —

Meaning: lift or carry (something heavy).

Synonyms: lift, lift up, raise

Antonyms: put down

Usage: “he lifted crates and hefted boxes”

3) Gobbledygook (Noun) –

Meaning: language that is Meaningless or is made  unintelligible by excessive use of technical terms.

Synonyms: bafflegab, double-talk, gibberish

Antonyms: sense, truth, possessions

Usage: “reams of financial gobbledygook

4) Yanked (Verb) —

Meaning: pull with a jerk.

Synonyms: jerk, pull, tug

Antonyms: fixed, pushed, put in

Usage: “her hair was yanked, and she screamed”

5) Riposte (Noun) —

Meaning: a quick, clever reply to an insult or  criticism.

Synonyms: retort, counter, rejoinder

Antonyms: question, request

Usage: “‘You’ve got a strange sense of honour,’  Grant riposted” He stepped, lungedparriedriposted, all the movements flowing into the next, a dance of incredible intricacy. 6) Recuse (Verb) —

Meaning: excuse oneself from a case because of a  potential conflict of interest or lack of impartiality.

Synonyms: disqualify oneself, excuse oneself

Antonyms: include oneself, insert oneself

Usage: “it was the right of counsel to ask a judge  to recuse himself from continuing to hear a case  because of bias”

7) Roster (Noun) —

Meaning: a list or plan showing turns of duty or  leave for individuals or groups in an organization.

Synonyms: list, listing, register

Antonyms: mishmash, mess, jumble

Usage: “next week’s duty roster

8) Conscription (Noun) –

Meaning: compulsory enlistment for state service,  typically into the armed forces.

Synonyms: call-up, draught

Antonyms: dismissal

Usage: “conscription was extended to married  men”

9) Fodder (Noun) –

Meaning: food, especially dried hay or straw, for  cattle and other livestock.

Synonyms: feed, food, rations

Antonyms: deprivation, starvation

Usage: “young people ending up as factory fodder

10) Souvenirs (Noun) –

Meaning: a thing that is kept as a reminder of a  person, place, or event.

Synonyms: memento, keepsake, reminder

Antonyms: forgotten

Usage: “the recording provides a souvenir of a  great production”
