National Sports Day: 29th August
Every year, 29th August has been celebrated as National Sports Day in India. The first National Sports Day was commemorated on 29th August 2012, on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand who was the star of hockey team of India.
This day was selected in the perspective of acknowledging this great hockey player and as an occasion to honour the country’s sporting heroes with recognitions awards like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award and the Dronacharya Award.
International Day against Nuclear Tests: 29 August
The International Day against Nuclear Tests is celebrated globally on 29th August since 2010. The day points to increase information about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
National Headlines
Piyush Goyal e-launches “National GIS-enabled Land Bank system”
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal has virtually launched the “National GIS-enabled Land Bank system”. The system was launched during a virtual meeting with the industry, ministers of states, UT administrators and senior officers of the central and State Governments.
This initiative is being supported by National e-Governance Division, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-Informatics Invest India, and National Center of Geo-Informatics.
National GIS-enabled Land Bank system has been developed by integration of Industrial Information System (IIS) with State GIS Systems. Initially, the system has been launched in the six states. The system will be improved further to make it an effective, transparent mechanism of land identification as well as procurement.
Union Minister launches “Chunauti” Next Generation Start-up Challenge
“Chunauti”, a Next Generation Startup Challenge Contest has been launched by the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad. The contest aims to further boost startups and software products with special attention on Tier-II towns of India.
The “Chunauti” contest will identify about 300 startups engaged in identified areas and offer them seed fund of upto Rs. 25 Lakh along with other facilities. For this programme, a budget of Rs. 95.03 Crore has been earmarked by the government for over a period of three years.
BPR&D celebrates its Golden Jubilee Anniversary on 28th August, 2020
The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) celebrated its Golden Jubilee Anniversary on 28th August 2020. BPR&D was raised on 28th August 1970, through a resolution of Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
The Bureau was mandated to encourage excellence in policing, promote the speedy and systematic study of police problems, apply science and technology in the method and techniques by the Police. The bureau has played a vital role in shaping the Indian Police.

Delhi Govt launched ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind’ fitness campaign
Delhi Government has launched the Fitness Campaign “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind” fitness campaign, for the students who are confined in their homes because of the lockdown imposed on Schools and colleges due to COVID-19 pandemic.
As a part of the “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind” campaign, a YouTube channel has been started which uploads a video on every Wednesday, by which the students can practice for a week to maintain fitness and make up for the loss of physical activities amid pandemic.

Kerala Govt commissioned 1st Marine Ambulance ‘PRATHEEKSHA’
The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan commissioned the first-ever marine ambulance named ‘PRATHEEKSHA’ at Vizhinjam village of Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala. The other marine ambulances that are to be deployed are Pratyasha and Karunya.
Pratheeksha is first in the series of 3 fully equipped marine ambulance boat built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), for the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Kerala.

Uttar Pradesh government launches NRI unified portal
Uttar Pradesh government has launched the NRI unified portal. Overseas Indians and NRIs will be able to get their issues resolved with the help of this portal in cooperation with local administration or the State Government, as there are many instances when they could not find a platform to help their families resolve the problems related to their house as well as issues with local administration.
The state government will also create a database of the state’s migrant workers employed in different countries of the world and will help offer assistance during any emergency. The portal will also offer an opportunity to those who want to go abroad.

Japan’s longest-serving PM Shinzo Abe resigns
The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe has announced to step down from the post on 28 August 2020, because of the poor health conditions.
The 65-year-old had held record 7 years and eight months as leader of the world’s third-biggest economy, becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history. Shinzo Abe had been serving as the PM of Japan since 26 December 2012.
Prior to this, he had also served as the PM for a short period between July 2006 to September 2007, becoming the youngest PM of the country, elected at the age of 52.
Kevin Mayer resigns as CEO of TikTok
TikTok CEO, Kevin Mayer has stepped down from the post, amid US pressure for its Chinese owner to sell the popular video app. His resignation follows President Donald Trump’s order to ban TikTok unless its parent company, ByteDance, sells its US operations to an American company within 90 days. U.S. General Manager of Tiktok, Vanessa Pappas will replace him on an interim basis.

Sri Lankan cricketer Tharanga Paranavitana retires
Sri Lankan Opening batsman, Nishad Tharanga Paranavitana has announced retirement from all forms of International Cricket. He has represented Sri Lanka in 32 Test Matches scoring 1792 runs including two hundred and 11 fifties.
Paranavitana made his debut against Pakistan in February 2009 and played his final game for the national team in November 2012. He is Sri Lanka’s highest ever run-getter in first-class cricket with 12,522 runs.
GoI enhances prize money in National Sports Awards
The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju has announced an enhancement in the prize money in four of the seven categories of the National Sports and Adventure Awards. He made this announcement on the occasion of the National Sports Day 2020. The prize money for the Sports Awards was last reviewed in 2008.
- The prize money for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award has been increased to 25 lakh rupees from the previous amount of 7.5 lakh rupees.
- Arjuna Award has been enhanced to 15 lakh rupees from 5 lakh.
- The Dhronacharya (Lifetime) awardees, who were earlier given 5 lakh rupees will now be given 15 lakh rupees as cash prize, while Dhronacharya (Regular) will be given 10 lakh instead of 5 lakh rupees per awardee.
- Dhyanchand Awardees will be given 10 lakh rupees instead of 5 lakh rupees.
India plans to host BRICS Games in 2021
India is planning to host BRICS Games 2021, which will be aligned with the Khelo India Games scheduled for next year. This announcement came after Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju attended a meeting of Sports Ministers of the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
India will get the chairmanship of the five-nation independent international group in 2021. BRICS Games 2021 will be held during the same time and at the same venues as of Khelo India Games 2021 so that our players from various parts of the country who will gather for Khelo India Games will have the benefit of witnessing BRICS Games from close quarters.
Bryan brothers announces retirement from the sport
The most successful men’s doubles pair in tennis history, Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan have announced their retirement from the sport. The brother’s pair captured an Open Era record with 119 trophies in 26 seasons which comprises all four Grand Slams, all nine ATP Masters 1000s as well as the Olympic gold medal.
The Bryan brothers’ first major success came at the 2003 French Open and reached to No. 1 spot in the ATP Doubles Rankings on 8 September 2003 and spent a total time of 438 weeks at the top.
Dwayne Bravo becomes 1st bowler to scalp 500 wickets in T20 cricket
West Indies All-Rounder, Dwayne John Bravo became the first bowler in cricket to scalp 500 wickets in Twenty20 matches. He achieved the feat in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 match between his team Trinbago Knight Riders and St Lucia Zouks.
Bravo took the wicket of Rahkeem Cornwall (18) to register his 500th wicket. Dwayne Bravo achieved the feat in his 459th match in the shortest format.

NCPUL organises “World Urdu Conference” in New Delhi
National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) has organised the “World Urdu Conference” in New Delhi. The inaugural session of the two days long conference was virtually addressed by Union Education Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.
During the conference, the minister added that Government of India will honor Urdu writers and literators with awards and honours in the name of important personalities of Urdu in order to encourage Urdu writers for literary and creative services. NCPUL has organised the conference to celebrate the quintessential spirit of Urdu, its inclusive ethos and creative character.

17th meeting of India-Vietnam Joint Commission held virtually
The 17th meeting of the India-Vietnam Joint Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation was held virtually. The virtual meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Binh Minh.
The 17th meeting included the deliberations on the recent developments in the India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. During the meeting, both countries approved to add new momentum to the economic and defence engagement. They also agreed to explore closer cooperation in emerging areas like civil nuclear energy, space, marine sciences and new technologies.
Obituary
Chadwick Boseman passes away
Black Panther actor, Chadwick Boseman passed away after a four-year battle with colon cancer. He was born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina, and made his acting debut in the TV series “All My Children” in 2003.
He made his big-screen debut in 2008 in the biopic The Express: The Ernie Davis Story where he played Floyd Little. He played famous Black Panther role in the Marvel cinematic universe.
Former Supreme Court Judge Justice A.R. Lakshmanan passes away
Former Supreme Court judge Justice, A.R. Lakshmanan passed away. He was born in Devakottai in Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu on March 22, 1942.
He was appointed as the supreme court judge on December 20, 2002 and retired on March 22, 2007. Currently he was the sitting representative of Tamil Nadu in the Mullai Periyar Panel headed by Justice A.S.Anand.
