The Hindu English Vocabulary

1)  toppling  (verb) – गिर पड़ना

Meaning: overbalance or  cause to overbalance and fall; An unexpected result or situation, typically a win in a sporting match

Synonyms: falling tumbling capsizing upset drubbing reversal

Antonyms: employment hiring retention

Usage:  Across  the  globe,  people  in large  numbers  have  been seen  toppling statues  that stood as icons of their past oppres­sion  and  continuing  humiliation

2) lament (verb) – शोक

Meaning: Express passionate grief about; A passionate expression of grief or sorrow

Synonyms: mourn grieve bemoan lamentation moan wail

Antonyms: celebrate delight joy exultation rejoicing celebration

Usage: It is inevitable that one must lament the tardiness of the criminal justice system.

3) herald (verb) – अग्रदूत

Meaning: A person or thing viewed as a sign that something is about to happen; To declare loudly, openly or publicly

Synonyms; forerunner harbinger sign announce advertise advertize

Antonyms– adversary antagonist opponent

Usage: The Internet is often spoken about as a  great equaliser.  Its evolution was meant to herald a more equal socie­ty.

4) smidgen (verb) – चुटकी

Meaning: A very small quantity or amount; A very small or inadequate amount of money

Synonyms: ace, bit crumb pittance

Antonyms:  entirety glob lot

Usage: The pandemic has shown us a smidgen of just how reprehensible the digital divide is.

5) staunching  (noun) – निष्ठावान

Meaning: to stop the flow of (blood); to draw to a close

Synonyms:  halting stemming stopping halting

Antonyms: disloyal unfaithful unreliable

Usage:  A staunching of the gateways to the web invariably strikes at the dignity of individuals.

6) compunction (adj) – पश्चाताप

Meaning: A pricking of conscience or a feeling of regret, especially one which is slight or fleeting; The action of objecting to something

Synonyms: contrition guilt misgiving demur objection exception

Antonyms: happiness willingness inclination

Usage: The government feels no compunction in doing precisely just this in Jammu and Kashmir ( J&K)

7) unassailable (Noun) – अकाट

Meaning: Unable to be attacked, questioned, or defeated; Having power and influence over others

Synonyms: invincible invulnerable impregnable dominant commanding authoritative

Antonyms: assailable defenceless vulnerable worst lousiest poorest

Usage: The authorities see the  restric­tion, which was placed in the lead up to the dilution of  Article  370 of the Constitution, as unassailable.

8) impinges (noun) – टकराना

Meaning: Have an effect, especially a negative one; Enter with a disruptive or adverse effect

Synonyms: affects touches influences infringes invades violates abuts adjoins joins

Antonyms: avoids dodges leaves alone

Usage:  It impinges on the liberty of an entirepopulace.

9) Ameliorate (adj) – उन्नति

Meaning: make (something bad or unsatisfactory) better.

Synonyms: tweak, enhance, ease, redress

Antonyms: worsen, deteriorate,

Usage: the courts are making an effort to ameliorate their living conditions is an undoubted source of comfort and relief.

10)  exigencies (noun) – अनिवार्यता

Meaning: an urgent need or demand.

Synonyms: need demand requirement want necessity essential requisite

Antonyms: frivolousness, triviality,  levity, flightiness

Usage:  But here, at home, some courts have not found the time to seek an explanation for the police brutality writ large, but heartlessly shrouded in the exigencies of the Covid-19 lockdown.
