National Statistics day celebrated on 29th June

Government of India observes the National Statistics day on 29th June on the birth anniversary of Prof. P C Mahalanobis. This day is celebrated to create knowledge among youth about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.

The National Statistics Day was first observed on 29th June 2007. Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis is also known as the father of Indian Statistics. The theme of Statistics Day 2020 is selected as SDG- 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages) & SDG- 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls).

Arjun Munda inaugurates Tribes India store on GeM

Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Arjun Munda has introduced the TRIBES India store on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and the TRIFED’s new website (trifed.tribal.gov.in).

The store will help in expediting investments by the Government. The newly started website contains all relevant information about the schemes as well as initiatives underway to the benefit of tribal communities. The products and the website were launched during a webinar organised by TRIFED, Ministry of Tribal affairs with a focus on “TRIFED Goes Digital” and “Be Vocal for Local”.

BRO rebuilds bridge on Munsyari Milam Road near Indo -China Border in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand

A critical bridge on the Munsyari Milam Road near the Indo -China Border in Pithoragarh Uttarakhand, has been rebuilt by the Border Road Organisation(BRO) in a record time of five days.

The 100 feet long bridge with a capacity of carrying the weight of around 30 tonnes, is the only route for movement of Army and ITBP personnel to the higher Himalayan posts along the china border.

Govt Approves Additional Rs 1,691 Crore for Highway Works in J&K, Uttarakhand for 2020-21

The government has approved an additional Rs 1,691 crore for highway works by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand for 2020-21.

Of this, Rs 1,351.10 crore has been sanctioned to BRO for road works in Jammu & Kashmir.

A total of Rs 340 crore ceiling has been approved for Uttarakhand for national highways.

Ministry of Culture celebrates “Sankalp Parva”

The Ministry of Culture is observing the “Sankalp Parva” from 28th June to 12 July 2020. Under the “Sankalp Parva” recognition, Ministry of Culture expects its Subordinate Offices, Academies, Attached Institutions as well as Affiliated Institutions to plant trees in its campus or at the surroundings wherever it is possible. The ministry also recommended five trees which represent the herbal heritage of our country. These are Awla, Bel, Pepal, Bargad, Ashok.

Micheal Martin becomes new PM of Ireland

Micheal Martin has been selected as new Prime Minister of Ireland by the lower house of the Irish parliament. There are collectively 160 seats within the current lower house of Irish parliament with one seat getting to the speaker of the house who wasn’t involved within the vote. He won the election after receiving 93 votes in favour, 63 votes against and 3 votes in abstention.

Hindustan Zinc launches “Koi Bacha Rahe Na Bhookha” campaign

Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), in association with Government’s Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), has launched “Koi Bacha Rahe Na Bhookha” campaign – aimed at improving the health and well-being of the children in the age group of 0-6 years across 3089+ Anganwadis in

Through this campaign, HZL aims to break the chain of malnutrition and provide good health for children, lactating women and families, who have been severely impacted by the aftermath of Covid-19 pandemic.

The project is being implemented in partnership with reputed NGOs like Gramin Avam Samajik Vikas Sanstha (Ajmer), CARE India (Bhilwara & Chittorgarh), Jatan Sansthan (Rajsamand) and Seva Mandir (Udaipur) and would cover five districts of Rajasthan.

The campaign has been launched under Khushi Anganwadi programme which is a unique tri-partite Public-People initiative.

IAS Vini Mahajan becomes 1st woman chief secretary of Punjab

IAS Vini Mahajan has become 1st woman chief secretary of Punjab. She was a 1987-batch IAS officer. She will replace Karan Avtar Singh, who has now been posted as Special Chief Secretary, Governance Reforms and Public Grievances. Presently, Vini Mahajan is the only Punjab cadre officer in the state to hold a Secretary’s post at the Centre.

UN honours Kerala Health Minister K.K Shailaja

Kerala Health Minister K.K Shailaja was honoured by the United Nations for her works to fight the coronavirus pandemic in her state. She was honoured for having low mortality rates in Kerala. G20 Extraordinary Virtual Education Ministers’ Meet

The G20 Extraordinary Virtual Education Ministers’ Meeting was held to address the widespread disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the education sector. Union HRD Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ represented India in the meeting. The meeting held under the presidency of Saudi Arabia was convened to deliberate the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic on the education sector, to discuss how different governments are dealing with it and how the Member States can collaborate to further the cause of education in these difficult times.

Indian Navy inducts Advanced Torpedo Decoy System “Maareech”

The Indian Navy has initiated an advanced anti-torpedo decoy system called ‘Maareech’ which has been created and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and it is capable of detecting, finding and offsetting incoming torpedo. The prototype of this technique installed onboard a nominated naval platform had successfully completed all user evaluation trials and demonstrated the features as per the Naval Staff Qualification Requirements.

Indian umpire Nitin Menon inducted in ICC Elite Panel

Indian umpire Nitin Menon has been inducted into International Cricket Council’s Elite Panel of Umpires for the upcoming 2020-21 season. He has replaced England’s umpire Nigel Llong. Nitin Menon was earlier a part of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Umpires. He has an experience of officiating in three Tests, 24 One Day Internationals and 16 T20 Internationals.

India becomes 1st country to control locusts through drones

India is the first country to control locusts through drones. Under the Make in India initiative, the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers’ Welfare (DAC&FW), Agriculture Ministry has indigenously developed a vehicle-mounted Ultra-low volume (ULV) sprayer for locust control. Locust is a crop-threatening migratory pest that has entered the country through the India-Pakistan border.
