The Hindu English Vocabulary

1)  Turncoat (noun) 

Meaning: One who turns against a previous affiliation or allegiance

Synonyms: traitor, apostate, betrayer, defector, deserter, Judas, quisling,  serpent,

Antonyms: loyalist, patriot, defender, supporter

Usage:  I believe our great councillor before him would never have defected and become a turncoat.

2) smother (verb) 

Meaning: To refrain from openly expressing or displaying: To kill something by suffocating

Synonyms: assuage(make little intense), stifle, repress, strangle, suppress, muffle, restrain, conceal

Antonyms: accelerate, separate, unfasten, expedite, welcome

Usage: Plastic toys, cigarette lighters, and derelict fishing gear smother the coral reefs and litter the island shores.

3) Grotesque (adj) 

Meaning: Comically or repulsively ugly or distorted; causing fear or terror

Synonyms: gnarled, mangled, mutilated, freaky, homely, deformed, distorted, unnatural, bizarre.

Antonyms: attractive, beauteous, beautiful, bonnie, comely

Usage: The masks are often grotesque, humorous or satirical and the dances can be noisy and boisterous.

4) churn (verb) 

Meaning: To rise and fall rhythmically or spasmodically(occasionally); sometimes violently; To agitate rapidly and repetitively

churn out something definition: to produce something automatically, without much thought, and in large amount

Synonyms: boil, seethe, swirl, roil, foam froth, toss, Heave, moil, be turbulent effervesce(Be vivacious and enthusiastic)

Antonyms: be happy, stream, pour, roll, be still, be flat

Usage: But while the business continued to churn out revenue, his management team was in the midst of a longstanding bicoastal tug-of-war.

5) Whimsical (noun) 

Meaning: Playfully quaint or fanciful, especially in an appealing and amusing way Acting or behaving in a capricious manner; Treating serious issues with inappropriate humor

Synonyms: wise, flippant, facetious, eccentric, mischievous, odd, peculiar

Antonyms: sincere, earnest, genuine, honest

Usage:  This whimsical piece of mischief by his brother brought a quiet laugh from David.

6) scramble (verb) 

Meaning: To cause disarray or disorganization in the order of: Struggle or compete with others for something in an eager or uncontrolled and undignified way, A rush or hurry towards a destination or goal

Synonyms: swiftness, urgency, hastiness, bustle, hustle, flurry , scuffle, tussle

Antonyms: arrangement, neatness, single, orderliness, calm, control

Usage: Nebraska is a classic West Coast team with a lot of jumps and scramble shifts before the ball is snapped.

This is a new benchmark for LCD production that competitors will have to scramble to emulate.

7) Scrimmage (noun) –

Meaning:  A dispute or conflict between opposing groups or individuals, A practice game which does not count on a team’s record

Synonyms:  skirmish, combat, conflict, dustup, fracas, fray, hassle, scrap, scrum

Antonyms: conciliation, pacification, goodwill, cordiality, amity

Usage: Winning in football has long been traced to controlling the line of scrimmage.

8) salvage (noun) 

Meaning: To rescue (a wrecked or disabled ship or its cargo) from loss at sea, To prevent or protect (something) from being destroyed

Synonyms: preserve, regain, recapture, recoup, redeem

Antonyms: abandon, endanger, forfeit, harm, hurt, injure

Usage:  Use the crop tool to salvage something usable from your obscured photo, and the enlarge wizard to blow it up to a reasonable size.

9) Harking back (verb)

Meaning: To have origin in or be reminiscent of a past event or condition; recall or evoke

Synonyms: listening, attending, hearkening, hearing, harkening , apprehending, descrying(Arriving at after searching, study, or effort),

Antonyms: ignoring, tuning out

Usage: songs that hark back to the soul music of the 1960s.

10) Outright (verb)  

Meaning: Open and direct, Conspicuously or obviously bad, wrong or offensive

Synonyms: unexpurgated, unabridged, entire, uncondensed, exhaustive,  clear, definite, unequivocal

Antonyms: ambiguous, conditional, hesitating, imperfect, incomplete

Usage: His idea of campaign finance reform is to ban soft money outright while removing all limits for personal contributions.
