The Hindu English Vocabulary

LEEWAY (Noun) : स्वतंत्रता

  • Meaning: the amount of freedom to move or act that is available.
  • अर्थ: उपलब्ध होने या कार्य करने की स्वतंत्रता की मात्रा।
  • Synonyms: freedom, scope, slack, laxity
  • Antonyms: constraint, restriction
  • Example: The bond market does not allow any leeway to borrowers in repayment, and there is no reason why bank loans should be any different.

SLACKEN (Verb) : शिथिल करना

  • Meaning: make or become slack.
  • अर्थ: बना या सुस्त हो गया।
  • Synonyms: loosen, relax
  • Antonyms: tighten
  • Example: It is now important for the central bank to ensure that the discipline in the system does not slacken.

BELEAGUER (Verb) : तंग करना

  • Meaning: put in a very difficult situation.
  • अर्थ: बहुत मुश्किल में डाल दिया।
  • Synonyms: bedevil, troubled
  • Antonyms: aid, assist
  • Example: The board is supporting the beleaguered director.

OBLIVION (Noun) : विस्मृति

  • Meaning: the state of being unaware or unconscious of what is happening around one.
  • अर्थ: एक के आसपास क्या हो रहा है उससे अनजान या बेहोश होने की अवस्था।
  • Synonyms: unconsciousness, insensibility, stupor, stupefaction

MODICUM (Noun) : अल्पभाग

  • Meaning: a small quantity of a particular thing, especially something desirable or valuable.

  • Synonyms: dubious, doubtful, unconvinced
  • Antonyms: certain, convinced, optimistic
  • Example: it’s good to be sceptical about what you see on TV.

ABHORRENT (Adjective) : घिनौना

  • Meaning: inspiring disgust and loathing; repugnant.
  • अर्थ: घृणा और घृणा को प्रेरित करना; निंदा करनेवाला।
  • Synonyms: detestable, hateful, abominable, repugnant
  • Antonyms: acceptable, agreeable, alluring, delightful

  • Meaning: suppose that something is true without having evidence to confirm it.
  • अर्थ: मान लीजिए कि बिना पुष्टि के सबूत के बिना कुछ सच है।
  • Synonyms: conjecture, suspect, deduce, infer
  • Antonyms: know
  • Example: Jason knew it was wrong of him to surmise his brother had stolen his money without actual proof.

MACABRE (Adjective) : भीषण

  • Meaning: disturbing because concerned with or causing a fear of death.
  • अर्थ: परेशान होना क्योंकि मृत्यु का भय हो या उससे संबंधित हो।
  • Synonyms: gruesome, grisly, grim, gory, morbid, ghastly, unearthly,
  • Antonyms: appealing, attractive, delectable
  • Example: While David has a talent for pulling macabre pranks, it can get a little bothersome when he doesn’t limit them to Halloween.

INGRESS (Noun) : प्रवेश

  • Meaning: the action or fact of going in or entering; the capacity or right of entrance.
  • अर्थ: भीतर जाने या प्रवेश करने की क्रिया या तथ्य; प्रवेश की क्षमता या अधिकार।
  • Synonyms: entrance, access, admittance, approach
  • Antonyms: egress, exit
  • Example: If you sit in front of the doorway, you are creating a safety hazard by blocking the path of ingress into the hospital.
