The Hindu English Vocabulary

PRAGMATISM (noun) : व्यवहारवाद

  • Meaning: the quality of dealing with a problem in a sensible way that suits the conditions that really exist, rather than following fixed theories, ideas, or rules.
  • अर्थ: एक समस्या से निपटने की गुणवत्ता एक समझदार तरीके से जो उन परिस्थितियों के अनुकूल है जो वास्तव में मौजूद सिद्धांतों, विचारों या नियमों का पालन करने के बजाय मौजूद हैं।
  • Synonyms: prudence, expediency, sensibleness, practicality.
  • Antonyms: idealism, inappropriateness, impracticality, timidity.
  • Example: The bumper payday was partly a result of pragmatism and caution rather than grand design.

PROBE(Noun) : जांच

  • Meaning: a thorough investigation into a crime or other matter.
  • अर्थ: अपराध या अन्य मामले की गहन जांच।
  • Synonyms: investigation, inquiry, examination, scrutiny
  • Example:  An independent investigator will probe the allegations of racial bias in police hiring.

SHREWD(Adjective) : चालाक

  • Meaning: having or showing sharp powers of judgment; astute.
  • अर्थ: निर्णय की तेज शक्तियाँ होना या दिखाना; चतुर।
  • Synonyms: astute, sharp-witted, sharp, acute, intelligent
  • Antonyms: stupid, unwise, ingenuous
  • Example:  As a motivational speaker, Clark is a shrewd manipulator of human emotions.

INCONCEIVABLE(adjective) : समझ से बाहर

  • Meaning: not capable of being imagined or grasped mentally; unbelievable.
  • अर्थ: मानसिक रूप से कल्पना करने या समझ पाने में सक्षम नहीं; अविश्वसनीय।
  • Synonyms: implausible, improbable, incredible, incogitable.
  • Antonyms: plausible, reasonable, tenable, conceivable.
  • Example: When I looked at my outrageous hospital bill, I blinked at the inconceivable amount.

PRUDENCE (Noun) : विवेक

  • Meaning: the quality of being prudent; cautiousness.
  • अर्थ: विवेकपूर्ण होने का गुण; सतर्क।
  • Synonyms: wisdom, judgment,  sagacity, shrewdness
  • Antonyms: folly, recklessness
  • Example: Maybe you’ll exercise a little more financial prudence next time.

PURLOIN (verb) : चुराना

  • Meaning: steal (something).
  • अर्थ: चोरी (कुछ)।
  • Synonyms: loot, pilfer, steal, embezzle.
  • Antonyms: bestow, contribute, donate, purchase.
  • Example: Sometimes it’s impossible to not purloin an excerpt from another person’s blog.

 INCONCEIVABLE(adjective) : समझ से बाहर

Preponderance (NOUN) : प्रधानता

  • Meaning: the quality or fact of being greater in number, quantity, or importance.
  • अर्थ: संख्या, मात्रा, या महत्व में अधिक होने का गुण या तथ्य।
  • Synonym: prevalence, predominance, dominance
  • Antonym: couple, few, handful, smattering, sprinkling

 VANTAGE (noun)  : सहूलियत

  • Meaning: a position giving a strategic advantage, commanding perspective, or comprehensive view.
  • अर्थ:  एक रणनीतिक लाभ, दृष्टिकोण, या व्यापक दृष्टिकोण देने वाली स्थिति।
  • Synonyms: advantage, edge, high ground, upper hand.
  • Antonyms: disadvantage, drawback, liability, penalty.
  • Example: The observatory deck is a great vantage point for viewing Manhattan.
