The Hindu English Vocabulary

WREST (Verb) : हथियाना

  • Meaning: forcibly pull (something) from a person’s grasp.
  • अर्थ: किसी व्यक्ति की समझ से जबरन (कुछ) खींचना।
  • Synonyms: wrench, snatch, seize, grab
  • Antonyms: give
  • Usage: Sita felt she had to wrest the weapon from the hostage-taker for the sake of her safety.

BACKSTOP (noun) : सुरक्षा

  • Meaning: an emergency precaution or last resort.
  • अर्थ: एक आपातकालीन एहतियात या अंतिम उपाय।
  • Synonyms: safeguard, preventive measure, insurance.
  • Antonyms: constraint, limitation, restriction, sanction.
  • Usage: They want the Democrats to act as a backstop for this wild nonsense.

Contrition:(Noun) : पछतावा

  • Meaning:- the state of feeling sorry for bad behaviour: the state of repentance.
  • अर्थ:  बुरे व्यवहार के लिए खेद महसूस करने की स्थिति: पश्चाताप की स्थिति।
  • Synonyms: contriteness, guilt, penitence, regret, remorse, repentance
  • Antonyms:-impenitence, remorselessness
  • Usage:- The defendant pled guilty to the crime and expressed heartfelt contrition for the things he had done.

Plaintive (Adjective) : दर्दनाक

  • Meaning: expressing suffering or sadness, sounding sad and mournful.
  • अर्थ: दुख या दुख व्यक्त करना, दु: खी और शोकाकुल लगना।
  • Synonym: aching, agonized, bitter, mournful, sad, wistful, doleful, pathetic, pitiful, piteous, melancholy, lamentable
  • Antonym: delighted, exulting, glorying, happy, joyful, rejoicing, triumphant, jocus, blithesome, euphoric.
  • Usage:- We could hear the plaintive cry of the wounded animal in the woods.

EMANCIPATE : स्वतंत्र करना

  • Meaning: to give people social or political freedom and rights
  • अर्थ: लोगों को सामाजिक या राजनीतिक स्वतंत्रता और अधिकार देना
  • Synonyms: discharge, liberate
  • Antonyms: confine, restrain
  • Usage: Produce a bill to emancipate the slaves in the District of Columbia, or, if you prefer it, to emancipate those born hereafter.

EXIGENT (Adjective) : जरूरी, अत्यावश्यक 

  • Meaning: pressing; demanding.
  • अर्थ : अत्यावश्यक, माँग करना
  • Synonyms: urgent, crucial
  • Antonyms: unpressured, facile
  • Example: I try not to be exigent with my students, but as a teacher I have to press them to get their work done.

EULOGIZE(Verb): स्तुति करना

  • Meaning: to praise someone or something in a speech or piece of writing
  • अर्थ : भाषण या लेखन के किसी अंश में किसी की प्रशंसा करना
  • Synonyms: applaud, commend
  • Antonyms: blame, criticize
  • Example: Critics everywhere have eulogized her new novel.

DIMINUTION (Noun) : अवनति

  • Meaning: a reduction in the size, extent, or importance of something.
  • अर्थ: किसी चीज के आकार, सीमा या महत्व में कमी।
  • Synonyms: curtailment,  contraction, constriction, restriction, limitation
  • Antonyms: increase, expansion, growth
  • Sentence:  The diminution of cafeteria monitors has resulted in an increase in food fights at the high school.

RELENT (verb) : नरम पड़ना

  • Meaning: to cease resistance (as to another’s arguments, demands, or control).
  • अर्थ: प्रतिरोध को रोकना (दूसरे के तर्क, मांग या नियंत्रण के अनुसार)।
  • Synonyms: concede, give in, submit, succumb.
  • Antonyms: combat, confront, counter, defy.
  • Sentence: Because my mother is very angry, she won’t relent on my severe punishment.

Malapert (adjective)  : गुस्ताख़

  • Meaning: boldly disrespectful; impudent.
  • अर्थ: साहसपूर्वक अनादर।
  • Synonym: impertinent, cheeky, rude, brazen.
  • Antonyms: courteous, humble, modest, polite.
  • Sentence: In a fury, she said that he was too malapert to give her such an answer, and affirmed that both he and they should repent it.
