International Day for Biological Diversity celebrated on 22 May
The United Nations celebrates International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May. This day is commemorated to promote knowledge about the issue of an important reduction in biological diversity due to certain human activities. The theme for International Day for Biological Diversity 2020 is “Our solutions are in nature”.

National Headlines
IGNOU’s “Online Master’s Programme in Hindi” launched by HRD Minister
Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ Union HRD Minister has started the IGNOU’s Online Master’s Programme in Hindi via Facebook Live session. This plan is expected to increase “Padhe India Online” initiative.
IGNOU has also begun various other programmes namely: MA in Gandhi and Peace Studies, BA in Tourism Studies, a certificate course in Arabic, a certificate in information technology, a certificate programme in Library and Information Science.

“Rajiv Gandhi Kisaan Nyay Yojana” launched in Chhattisgarh
“Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana” launched by Chhattisgarh government. This project aims to stimulate the rural economy in the state, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Into this yojana, Chhattisgarh government will infuse Rs 5100 crore into the state’s rural economy by directly giving the grant amount into the farmers’ accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer.

Uttar Pradesh governement rolls out ‘UP Start-up Fund’
Government of Uttar Pradesh has set up ‘UP Start-up Fund’ to support the registered start-up ventures present across different verticals in Uttar Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh government and the Small Industries Development Bank of India has signed the MoU, and the supply will be managed by SIDBI. An initial contribution of Rs 15 crore has been made to the fund.

RBI’s MPC reduces Policy Repo Rate to 4.00%
The key decisions taken in the Monetary Policy Committee meeting are:
- The repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) has been reduced by 40 basis points from 4.40% to 4.00%.
- The reverse repo rate under the LAF has been reduced by 40 basis points from 3.75% to 3.35%.
- The marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate have been reduced from 4.65% to 4.25%.

Centre launches scheme to solarise Konark sun temple & Konark town
The central government launched a new scheme for complete solarization of Konark Sun Temple and Konark town in Odisha to improve the ancient Sun Temple town of Konark as Surya Nagri. According to the report, 10 Mega Watt grid-connected solar project along with various solar off-grid applications such as solar trees and solar drinking water kiosks would be set up in the area. Ministry of New & Renewable Energy will provide 25 crores to complete this scheme.
